The 4th Annual Ohio Valley Woodcarving Expo, hosted by the River Valley Wood Carvers, took place on a beautiful September 27–28 at the Elks Lodge in Cold Spring, KY. Building on the success of previous years, this year’s expo welcomed 26 talented exhibitors and vendors, each eager to share their passion for woodcarving with attendees.
The event showcased the work of artists from local carving clubs, including the Cincinnati Carvers Guild, Miami Valley Woodcarvers, and the host club, River Valley Wood Carvers. Several independent artisans also displayed their unique creations, adding to the diverse and inspiring atmosphere of the expo.
A highlight of the event was the competitive judging contest, which featured 63 entries competing for ribbons and cash awards. Esteemed judges Pete Alderucci and Ron Gabelman selected Ron Vance’s “Bible Stick” carving as Best of Show. New this year was a silent-auction raffle featuring a Nativity Set hand-carved by members of the River Valley Wood Carvers. Each figurine reflected the individual style and talent of its carver, creating a truly one-of-a-kind set.
Funds were also raised for the RVWC “Ornaments for Kids” program. Attendees were encouraged to donate by purchasing hand-carved ornaments, supporting the club’s mission to provide ornaments to inner-city children and those at the Diocesan Center for Children and Families. The proceeds will be used to purchase wood and materials, ensuring the program can continue bringing joy to children year after year.
The creative fun didn’t stop there. The “Moon Splinters” carving contest challenged participants to transform a moon-shaped piece of basswood into a one-of-a-kind ornament. Norman Clifford took home top honors, and all entries were donated to the “Ornaments for Kids” program, spreading holiday joy to children in need.
A highlight of the expo was 12-year-old Jackson Rawe, who showcased his dedication to giving back. Supporting the Campbell County Special Olympics, Jackson raised $1,600 for the cause—and has now raised a remarkable $3,100 over the past two expos.
Vendors and exhibitors also enjoyed a special treat: complimentary lunches on both days, generously provided by the local Cracker Barrel in Cold Spring, KY.
The Ohio Valley Woodcarving Expo was more than an art show—it was a testament to community, creativity, and generosity. From first-time visitors to seasoned carvers, the event inspired, connected, and celebrated the passion that drives the woodcarving world.
